Hi, I used to hack pokemon a while back and have decided to get back into it, and as we can tell G/S/C hacking tools and hex has come a long way from when i gave up, the main reason for me quiting was lack of knowledge so much that it started to bore me. I am going to be working on a hack of Pokemon GOLD I have knowledge in map editing and an example: (New Bark Town) UPDATE!!!PLAYER I would also appreciate it if some people could help me out, maybe add me on msn for an easier way of communication to get this hack kick started. I generally need help with hex, i tried it before and was baffled, i am going to be honest and need to begin from the start of hex editing, but i am a quick learner Anybody want to help me please comment, thankyou.

lol, I used to remember you being a pro then (you posted that scripting tutorial in pokecommunity, remember ?) Anyway, hex editing isn't hard. I think myself that it's far easier than scripting with any tool.

I don't really know how to teach you, the skill just comes naturally after reading some information about it. First, you should get a hex editor (anything will work but for example I use Gold Finger) and a table file for the ROM you're going to hack. After that, I believe that the best way to start is to read this guide and I hope you learn how to hex edit then www.romhacking.net/docs/75/P.S If you don't know how to count in hex, you should use Calculator to make hex editing easier.

Yeah, hex editing really isn't as complicated as people make it out to be. A lot of people just get intimidated when they open the file, and see a bunch of numbers and letters that don't make sense, freak out, and close it and say "I'll never understand that." But in reality, it's really simple to edit if you know where the data is and how its set up, like we point out in documents.
Basically, you load your rom, and use the hex editor's goto function to jump to whatever offset it tells you the data will be at. From there, the document will explain what the bytes mean, so you can go from there.
For example, if you have a document that says you go to (address here) and the data will be [map bank][map number][x location][y location], then when you go to that address, the first byte you see (which your cursor should be on) will be the map bank, the next will be the map number, and so on.
Hope this helps

scripts determine what the people, signposts, and triggers do in the game.

I use WindHex for all of my hex editing, I find it to be very useful.

by the way, what "scripting program" are you using? Poketext is not really a script editor, just a text editor. The script is what they actually do whereas a text editor just changes what they say.

Oh, I remember that one. PKSV or whatever it's called. I looked at it, and I heard someone say it would occasionally just cut off the end of scripts for no reason, and so I decided that wouldn't do and never gave it a second thought. Kind of a "that's nice. Come back and see me when you actually work" kind of deal. My thoughts on it may be completely wrong by now, who knows. I'll take a look at it again at some point though.

its pretty good, and say for example if you battle a pokemon E.G sudowudo event, if you want to change the pokemon you dont have to write its hex number, you just have to write its name e.g 0x9B-Celebi (i think thats cyndaquil, not exactly good with Hex numbers)
You can change the path of that old man in cherrygrove who gives you the map card (do you know how i could make a different way of obtaining map card?) its quite simple when you look at it without getting scared and thinking, no way! it also letss you decompile or load scripts from offsets
You can Change Text, SignPosts, People Etc
